A series connected universal motor has the potential to overspeed if it is operated without load.

This is in contrast to a motor with parallel connected field and rotor windings, which maintains a regulated speed.

At lot field currents, brushes tend to produce severe arcing. This is due to the magnetic field being “twisted” by the rotation of the rotor. There would be very little arcing, if the brushes were located directly at right angles to the field, but due to distortion of the field by the rotor, arcing gets worse. As field current reduces, so the distortion increases and arcing worsens.

Notice how the arcing reduces as load on the motor increases (and field current increases).
