Dyson’s Tangle-free Turbine tool uses two counter-rotating heads with brushes to remove hair and dirt, sucking it straight into the bin.
The counter-rotating heads are made from a very flexible plastic called thermoplastic polyurethane and the bristle configuration has been engineered to maximise pick-up — and takes inspiration from the modern toothbrush. Circular discs used early on in the design process left a strip of fibre behind. An elliptical disc shape ensured 100% cleaning coverage.
Dyson engineers took a mixture of long synthetic hair (18″ made of nylon) and real pet hair to assess the tools performance which included a bag of real Persian cat hair. Dyson engineers laid down 0.6 grams of long hair on carpet and ran pick up tests repeatedly. While competitor tools tangled in the first few tests, the Dyson Tangle-free Turbine tool maintained tangle-free after the 10th repetition. Engineers continued the repetition 50 times, and the tool still didn’t tangle.
All of Dyson’s technology is conceived and developed in Dyson’s Research, Design and Development lab in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. It is here that a team of 50 engineers spent 4 years developing and prototyping the new tool.
